The Wilmington Hammerheads were founded in 1996 and are based out of Wilmington, North Carolina. The club has found success consistently, with division championships in 2001, 2002, and 2009 along with a league championship in 2003. Playing home matches at Legion Stadium, the club sports a light blue kit with white stripes and has a Hammerhead Shark as the team mascot, since the city of Wilmington is on the Atlantic coast. The club is competing in the USL Professional Division in 2011 after being on hiatus in 2010. The club has had a knack for upsetting Major League Soccer clubs in the US Open Cup. In 2003, in the middle of a mediocre year, the Hammerheads defeated the Dallas Burn by a score of 4-1, shocking the soccer world. Notable players include Mark Briggs, Glenn Murray, and Jamie Watson.
