SUNDERLAND, England(AP) Sunderland has fired manager Steve Bruce after the northeast club slipped to 16th in the Premier League with just one win from its last eight matches.

Bruce brought in players including Manchester United duo John O'Shea and Wes Brown during the offseason but the team is just two points above the relegation zone after losing to last-place Wigan at the weekend.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short says "results this season have simply not been good enough and I feel the time is right to make a change.''

Assistant manager Eric Black will take charge of the team until Sunderland finds a permanent replacement.
