Updated: January 04, 2012, 16:58

NEWCASTLE, England(AP) Manchester United slipped three points behind Manchester City in the title race by losing 3-0 to Newcastle on Wednesday for its second straight defeat in the English Premier League.

Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye scored sublime goals to put Newcastle 2-0 ahead at St. James' Park by the 47th minute and United's misery was complete when England defender Phil Jones put the ball into his own net in the final minute.

Coming four days after a shock 3-2 upset at the hands of Blackburn, United's latest defeat handed the initiative back to City, which defeated Liverpool 3-0 on Tuesday. Tottenham is three points further back in third.

Dimitar Berbatov came closest to scoring for United when his header hit the post in the 15th minute.
