England striker riles fans with Christmas shopping

Updated: December 19, 2011, 09:32

LONDON(AP) Most football fans would complain if they had to go shopping while their team was playing. It didn't seem to bother England striker Darren Bent.

Bent has apologized to Aston Villa fans after a picture appeared online showing him buying Christmas presents while his team was losing to Liverpool in one of Sunday's Premier League matches.

Villa's record signing missed the match because of injury but supporters were angered by his apparent lack of interest in the team's performance.

Bent apologized on Twitter and says: "Watched the majority of he game on tv. Never knew popping out would cause an issue and for that I apologise.''

Bent is Villa's leading scorer with five goals.
